Mapping the Queer Body: Queer Tropes and Malayalam Cinema

The narrative logic of mainstream Malayalam cinema is often predicated on heteronormative values and homophobic social practices. Though representations LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual agender) desires (both individual collective) have been subject to changes particularly after the historical verdict 2018, quite reluctant explore “the love that had for so long left out in cold” (Griffiths 2008, 130). Barring a few exceptions, most films produced Kerala (since cinema’s inception 1928) characterised as aberrant, abnormal, or deviant. Having said that, there considerable efforts from progressive filmmakers critique subvert sentiments society engage with queer either denotatively connotatively. This has made possible due their exposure variegated cultural result changing socio-economic political conditions. By identifying three major tropes (the closeted body, stereotyped visible body) filmic representations, paper attempts map many expressions subjectivities cinema. In process, article demonstrates how disrupts heteronormativity using its aesthetics.
